Our core business: Cattle

The Pitchfork Ranch purebred Hereford operation began in 1935.

Its first purchase: 100 purebred Hereford cows including a new Hereford bull, Ike Domino. Today, the ranch leans more towards commercial production, phasing out the purebred operation. However, it still lays claim to raising top quality beef cattle. Black and Black Baldies make up the majority of the cow population. These moderately-framed cows are bred to Black Angus Bulls. Bulls are selected for both maternal and carcass characteristics. All calves are source and age verified through an annual third party audit.

This process allows the calf crop to qualify for Verified Natural Beef programs. The calves are back grounded and weaned on the ranch for 60 to 75 days. If conditions allow, yearlings are then moved to wheat pasture for winter and spring grazing. The calves have proven to have the genetics to show significant gain on wheat, as well as in a feedlot with super carcass and quality grades. After wintering on wheat, they are sold private treaty unless the ranch chooses to retain ownership through the feed yard.
